The orchestra metaphor of consciousness

In 'is Consciousness an illusion', Julian Baggini compares consciousness metaphorically with an orchestra.

In 'is Consciousness an illusion', Julian Baggini compares consciousness metaphorically with an orchestra.

Quote: When you listen to an orchestra you have a sense of there being a single piece of music. You hear it as one thing. But we know that's only because there are all sorts of different instruments doing their bits there isn't a single thing there. The orchestra is a collection. In a way brain and consciousness is like an orchestra of the mind. They are all these different systems working together. They create a sense of oneness because of the way they harmonize.

The comparison of consciousness with an orchestra is a good start in realizing that consciousness is not something physical or something you can place or measure in space-time.

Quote

"Consciousness is there where no one can go, but everybody is"
